The Upper Missouri Wild and Scenic
River corridor is 150 miles of class one water flowing through a strip of
landscape that has change very little since the time of the earliest written
records describing it. For those seeking a rustic respite from the ordinary,
this national treasure offers a convenient wildness within reasonable reach
of modern amenities.
The Resource
In 1980, the US congress passed, and president Carter signed an act
designating the Missouri River from Fort Benton to the Fred Robinson
bridge as Wild and Scenic. Since that time, very little has changed
concerning management of this resource. In 2000, the US congress passed, and
president Clinton signed a bill designating a large portion of land
surrounding the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River as the Upper
Missouri River Breaks National Monument. This latter designation gave extra
protection and support to the river corridor, helping preserve the visual
and physical integrity of this world class treasure.
